Combined no-no, Rossi's 4 RBI headline SB split

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Donning their new jerseys in the Sunshine State, the Albion College softball team split on their opening day. Albion lost a tight 1-0 decision to Kenyon College in the morning before a 9-1 run rule win over Martin Luther College in the nightcap. Freshmen Kearney Miller and Mckenna Shearer combined for a five inning no hitter in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Kenyon 1 Albion 0

Batting as the hosts, Kenyon broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. The Ladies led off the frame with a single, who later came around to score on a two out double to left center.

Despite getting runners on, the Britons left eight runners on base, including multiple in scoring position.

In the circle, junior Ashley Pion allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out eight.

Albion had six hits in the contest, two coming from junior Mya Nummer.

GAME TWO: Albion 9 Martin Luther 1 (5 innings)

After Martin Luther scored in the top of the first, the Briton bats erupted for four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Jacqueline Jozefczyk reached on an error and moved to second when Nummer singled through the right side. In her first collegiate at bat, freshman Hannah Petty's sac bunt wound up being a single, loading the bases for Lilly Patillo

Patillo, a junior in the cleanup spot, delivered, blasting a two run double to the wall in left. With one away, Kacy Rossi poked a two-bagger to right center, driving in Petty and Patillo for a 4-1 lead after one.

The runs continued to come in bunches for the Brits, putting up another 4-spot in the third. Patillo crushed a solo shot to left, giving Albion a 5-1 lead. Chloe Miller roped a single down the right field line and moved all the way to third on an error by the MLC right fielder.

Rossi followed with a single to left, driving in Miller for a 6-1 advantage.

With the bases loaded and the lineup turned over, Jozefczyk roped a two-out, two-run single up the middle, driving in both Rossi and Kenadie Baareman

In the fourth, the Britons tacked on their ninth run. Jaclyn Hildebrand led off the frame with a single to left and moved to second when Parker Douglass walked. A wild pitch and a good read moved Hildebrand to third, and later scored on Rossi's fourth RBI of the afternoon.

Freshman McKenna Shearer came on in relief and struck out the side in the fifth to secure the win. Classmate Kearney Miller (1-0) earned the win, tossing three innings of one run ball. She and Shearer each struck out three while not allowing a single hit.

The Britons are back on the diamond tomorrow in the Sunshine State. Albion will play Pitt-Bradford and RIT, with game times set for 9 and 11 a.m.
