Game Recap: Softball |

Pion hits 200 career strikeouts in split

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Ashley Pion was masterful in the circle, highlighting the Albion College softball team's split on Monday. Pion threw a shutout in a 2-0 win over Pitt-Bradford before the Britons dropped a sloppy nightcap, 7-4, to RIT.

GAME ONE: Albion 2 Pitt-Bradford 0

Pion threw an absolute gem in a pitcher's duel. The junior tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out 13 and walking only one.

Albion got runners on in each of the first four innings, but finally broke through in the home half of the fifth. Olivia Polak led off the frame with a walk and moved to third when Lilly Patillo singled down the left field line. With runners on second and third and one away, the Britons brought in pinch hitter Chloe Miller

After great at bats on Sunday, Miller prevailed again, singling up the middle to drive in both runners. With Pion dealing, the two runs would be more than enough for Albion in the win.

GAME TWO: RIT 7 Albion 4

Sophomore Jacqueline Jozefczyk led off the game with a triple and later scored on a RIT error to give Albion an early lead. RIT answered immediately in the home half with a pair of runs, taking a 2-1 lead after one.

Megan Maiuri led off the second with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Shanyn Jewell. Olivia Polak drove home the freshman Maiuri when she drove a triple to right center, knotting the game at two. Jozefczyk continued her hot hitting with a single up the middle, plating Polak for a 3-2 advantage.

After RIT evened the game in the second, the Brits tacked on their final run in the fourth. Jewell drove in Maiuri, but it would be all the runs Albion would get in the nightcap.

RIT added a pair of runs in the fourth and two more insurance runs in the sixth.

Mckenna Shearer (0-1) struck out eight batters in five innings of work.

Albion will play another twinbill before their off day. On Tuesday, the Brits will play Drew University and Elms College. The games are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m.
