Game Recap: Softball |

Softball bounces back, splits on day three

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a tough loss in game one, the Albion College softball team rallied back to salvage a split on day three of their spring trip. Albion was shutout in the opener, 7-0, by an undefeated Drew University team before storming to a 13-0 win over Elms College.

GAME ONE: Drew 7 Albion 0

Drew led off the bottom of the second with a bunt single. The damage was quickly erased when the next batter's sac bunt attempt was popped up to the Albion catcher, Dylan Cardinale. Cardinale fired a strike to Kacy Rossi at first to double off the runner and suppress the Ranger threat.

Errors proved costly for the Britons in the bottom of the third, as the Rangers scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. Ashley Pion limited the damage, getting out of a bases loaded jam. With one away, the junior struck out the Drew 5-hitter looking and the next batter swinging for two big time punchouts.

Drew tacked on two in the fourth and three in the fifth, capitalizing on Albion miscues.

Albion mustered just two hits in the contest – coming from Chloe Miller and Shanyn Jewell

GAME TWO: Albion 13 Elms 0 (5 innings)

Determined to salvage a split, the Britons erupted for five runs on just two hits and one Blazer error in the top of the first. Jacqueline Jozefczyk and Lizzie Bissett opened the frame with back to back line drives to left. Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lilly Patillo

The junior drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run for the Brits. Rossi followed with a bouncer to second to score Bissett.

With a 4-0 lead and the bases reloaded, Kenadie Baareman smoked a one-hopper to the second baseman who made a great grab, but still resulted in an RBI groundout for the junior. After batting around, the Brits led 5-0 after one.

In the second, Albion added four runs off three hits and a pair of errors. The big blow came when Jewell belted a two-run double to the wall in center. Albion, batting as the home team, led 9-0 after two innings.

A wild pitch allowed the Brits to tack on their tenth run in the third.

The final three runs came in the fourth inning, aided by a pair of doubles. Freshman Makayla Frost popped a double down the right field line to drive in Olivia Polak. One batter later, Patillo doubled over the left fielder's head to trade places with Patillo.

Pion (3-2) bounced back in the nightcap. The junior threw 2.2 innings of one-hit ball while fanning five. Mckenna Shearer added 2.1 innings in relief.

Wednesday will serve as Albion's off day in Florida. They will begin the second half of their spring trip on Thursday against New Jersey City and Western Connecticut. Game times are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m.
