Game Recap: Softball |

Sweepin' Saturday! SB takes two from Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. – Production from all spots in the lineup helped the Albion College softball team pick up their first MIAA wins of the season, sweeping Olivet College on Saturday. Albion shutout the Comets in the opener, 6-0, before rallying from behind and winning game two, 6-4.

GAME ONE: Albion 6 Olivet 0

A two-out rally lifted the Britons to a 2-0 lead early on. Lizzie Bissett reached on an error, allowing Megan Maiuri to score the first run of the game. Maiuri reached on a single, as the Brits scored their first run of the inning. Another Olivet error followed, as Bissett crossed for the second Albion run.

Chloe Miller hit a one-out single to left in the fourth and moved to second on an error. Freshman Dylan Cardinale smacked her second of three hits in the game, driving home Miller to push Albion ahead, 3-0.

After the first two batters reached in the top of the sixth, Cardinale roped a single down the left field line, plating Shanyn Jewell for a 4-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, Maiuri lifted a sac fly to drive in Cardinale for the second run of the frame. Albion capped off the scoring on a fielder's choice.

Olivet committed seven errors in the contest.

Junior Ashley Pion (7-9) went the distance, striking out eight hitters.

GAME TWO: Albion 6 Olivet 4

Batting as the away team, the Comets struck for three runs in the top of the first for a quick lead.

Maiuri walked in the bottom of the inning and later came around to score on a double by Lilly Patillo, cutting the deficit to two runs.

Olivet tacked on an unearned run in the fourth, but once again Albion had an answer. The Brits scored twice in the home half, cutting Olivet's lead to 4-3. Parker Douglass reached on a pinch-hit single before being pinch ran for. Cardinale doubled down the line, sending Chloe Miller to third.

With two in scoring position, a wild pitch sent home Miller to trip the score to 4-2. Sophomore Jacqueline Jozefczyk later drove in Cardinale on a sac fly for the second Briton run of the inning.

Albion took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Patillo was plunked and Lizzie Bissett singled to start off the frame. Miller drew a walk to load the bases for Cardinale, who hit a sac fly to bring in Patillo. One batter later, Kenadie Baareman drove a double to left to bring in Bissett.

Freshman Gabrielle Hirkaway (2-5) earned the win in relief. Hirkaway threw six innings, giving up one run – unearned – while fanning six and walking none.

Bissett and Baareman each had two hits in the game.

Albion will be off until Thursday when they host Kalamazoo College. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
