Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Garland, freshmen lead MBB to win at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – Surviving a scare on the road, the Albion College men's basketball team hung on for a 79-78 win over Hope College. The win comes two weeks after the Flying Dutchmen handily defeated the Britons at Kresge Gymnasium.

Junior guard Fred Garland scored a career-high 30 points in the win. Three days following a triple double against Alma, Garland exploded for 30 points, cashing in on nine of 10 free throws.

Also utilizing an efficient night from the stripe, Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson scored 15 points, including seven from the free throw line. Freshman Michael Calhoun tacked on a career-best 11 points off the bench.

Albion got quality minutes from four freshmen off the bench – Calhoun, Nathan Steinman, Kameron Mayes and Beck Willems

With eight minutes remaining in the first half, the Brits had jumped out to a 10 point lead over the hosts. Throughout the final few minutes of the period, Albion began to inflate its lead, primarily at the foul line. A pair from Garland and two from Khy Winston saw Albion lead 43-23 at halftime.

As Albion maintained the big lead throughout the first half of the second, Hope slowly chipped away at the lead. With under four minutes to play, the lead dwindled to single digits as Albion hung on for the road win.

Steinman sank a pair of big free throws late, making it a four point game. Hope's last second three pointer did not matter in the end, thanks to the freshman's FTs.

AJ Barden brought down nine boards in the win.

On Wednesday Albion heads to Trine for a 7:30 p.m. game.
