Upset bid falls short at No. 23 Calvin

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Starting MIAA action against No. 23 Calvin University, the Albion College men's basketball team came up just short, falling to the Knights, 72-67. Holding a lead at the half, the Knights used a thunderous final five minus, aided by a pair of 3-pointers to steal the win.

Ken Thomas and Fred Garland did a majority of the damage offensively for Albion. Thomas led the visitors with 20 points. Garland added 19 points, seven assists and brought down an Albion-best eight rebounds.

Freshman Kameron Mayes added 11 points off the bench.

It was a back and forth first half, as Albion built a lead as large as seven, but Calvin stormed back to eventually tie and take a slim lead.

Forcing a Calvin turnover, the Britons got the ball back in the waning seconds of the half. As time expired, Garland sank a jumper from the elbow, vaulting Albion ahead at the half, 34-32.

Throughout the second half, Calvin took a small lead, but the Brits were able to work their way back and tie the game. Late in the contest, the Knights sank a triple to take a six point lead and never look back.

The Britons only attempted six free throws in the contest compared to Calvin's 25.

Calvin held the edge on the glass, out rebounding the Britons 44-34. Using that to their advantage, the Knights scored 18 second chance points.

Despite valiant efforts late, the Brits could not pull ahead or find the tying bucket.

On Saturday, the Britons will host No. 25 Trine for a 4:30 p.m. tip off. Prior to the game, Albion will honor legendary coach Mike Turner in a court dedication ceremony that will happen at 3:30 p.m.
