Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's hoops handles Caltech in west coast opener

PASADENA, Calif. – Insert whatever cliche about California, because it worked.

In their first game of their California trip, the Albion College men's basketball team handily defeated CalTech, 83-54. In back to back games, sophomore Nathan Steinman led the way with 17 points. Zak Krueger added 13 points for the Brits.

From the jump, Albion was in total control, breaking out to a 14-3 advantage after only six minutes of action. The Beavers worked to eventually tie the game at 18, but the Britons immediately had a response. A jumper from Steinman and a three off the hand of Zak Krueger helped inflate the lead back to five.

At the half, Albion held a 36-26 lead over the host Beavers. Out of the half, Marco Lucchesi converted a traditional three point play to lift the Britons to a 13 point advantage. Lucchesi contributed 11 points.

Krueger's triple as the shot clock expired pushed Albion up by 20 points with 15 minutes on the clock. From there, the Brits would hold control of the contest to cruise to the double-digit victory.

Sophomore Nate Childers tacked on a career-best 11 points, going 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. AJ Barden led the squad with six boards, as Kam Mayes pulled down six. Junior transfer Jaylen Flaniken recorded a game-best six steals in the win.

Albion shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, while a struggling Beaver team connected on just 35 percent of its shots. The team improves to 4-4 overall on the young season with three games remaining in non-conference action.

Tomorrow, the Britons will play La Verne to wrap up their west coast trip at 2 p.m. PST, 5 p.m. EST.
