Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mayes, Lucchesi record career days, double-doubles in win

LA VERNE, Calif. – California career-highs.

Backed by career days from Marco Lucchesi and Kam Mayes, the Albion College men's basketball team rallied to an 85-80 win over La Verne University. Both players recorded their first collegiate double-doubles, while dropping a new career mark in points.

Mayes led Albion with 19 points off the bench, converting on 11 of 15 free throws in the win. The sophomore also hauled in 11 rebounds – five on the offensive end. Lucchesi scored 17 points and collected a game-best 12 boards. Eight of Lucchesi's rebounds were on the defensive glass, limiting Leopard opportunities.

The sharp 3-point shooting of the Leopards helped the hosts hold a halftime advantage. La Verne erased a nine point Briton advantage and clawed back to take a 39-33 lead into the break.

Albion worked out of the half to tie the game less than five minutes into the new half. A layup from Zak Krueger evened the game at 48, as the senior guard finished with 14 points.

With Albion extending its lead – and watching it dwindle by an unfazed Leopard squad – the visitors answered the back and forth affair in the final few minutes.

An incredibly heads up play by Nathan Steinman inflated the Briton lead to four with 2:33 on the clock. With two seconds on the shot clock, the sophomore launched up a deep three, drawing a shooting foul. Steinman sank all three free throws for a 75-71 advantage, as he ended with 11 points.

Down the stretch, Steinman and Mayes drained four free throws apiece to ice the game.

AJ Barden was the final of five Albion players to finish in double figures. The senior scored 14 points, had seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.

With another 3 of 5 performance, Krueger is now shooting 45 percent from beyond the arc.

Albion will be off for the holiday before their next game on Dec. 29. The Brits will travel to Bluffton University to play Asbury at 5 p.m.
