Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX battles back, remains unbeaten

OBERLIN, Ohio – Surviving a scare and rallying back, the Albion College men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the contest to defeat Oberlin College 16-13. Freshman Cal Stearns played the role of hero, scoring the game-winning goal with just over five minutes remaining to improve the Britons to 2-0.

Albion broke out to a 4-1 lead, thanks to a pair of goals from Jace Conley. In that stretch, Stearns and junior attackman Ethan Rottell also recorded goals. Oberlin answered to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Brits used a 6-0 run to build a seven goal lead.

Six different players scored throughout that scoring run for the Brits. Jacob Castles, Brock Yabs, Timmy Salinas, Sam Puzevic, Stearns and Conley all registered goals to build the Albion lead to 10-3.

Salinas and Rottell each scored another goal in the second quarter, but the hosts chipped away at the Albion lead. At halftime, the Britons were clinging to a 12-7 lead.

Out of the break, the story was all Oberlin, as the Yeomen rattled off six straight goals out of the half, turning the five goal deficit into a one goal advantage. In the period, the Britons were held scoreless, desperately looking for a momentum shift.

With 10:37 remaining, Yabs netted his second goal of the afternoon to tie the game up at 13. Albion then took the lead for good with 5:05 to play, as freshman Marcus Haynie found classmate Stearns who put the Brits on top.

One minute later, sophomore Andrew Miller provided the visitors with an insurance goal on an unassisted strike. Conley rounded out the day with the team's 16th goal off a pass from Yabs.

Conley led the offense for the Britons, scoring four goals on the day. Six different players recorded three points in the victory (Puzevic 1G, 2A; Rottell 2G, 1A; Haynie 3A; Stearns 3G; Yabs 2G, 1A; Salinas 2G, 1A).

Senior Eddie Symons turned in another dynamic performance from the faceoff X. The reigning MIAA Athlete of the Week went 23 of 30 from the X, scooping up 22 ground balls.

Sophomore Jack Erickson earned the win in goal, making two saves while playing the final 11 minutes of the contest.

Albion was 15 of 17 on the clear.

The Britons improve to 2-0 on the young season.

The spring break trip continues for the Brits, as they will take on Rhodes College on Tuesday. Game time in Tennessee is at 6 p.m. CST.
