Game Recap: Softball |

Softball starts season strong with sweep

Ashley Pion struck out 14 in the game one win

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – No better way to start the season than with a pair of wins.

In their 2023 debut, the Albion College softball team won both games in South Carolina. The Britons used a dominant effort in the circle from Ashley Pion to defeat Massachusetts Maritime, 4-2, before the bats woke up in an 11-0 win over NVU-Lyndon.

GAME ONE: Albion 4 Mass. Maritime 2

Despite cranking out just three hits, the Britons were able to push four runs across in the home half of the third. Dylan Cardinale drew a one out walk and was lifted for pinch runner, Hannah Petty. Parker Douglass singled through the left side before she was also replaced on the bases by Grace Martin

Chloe Miller was plunked to load the bases for freshman, Lauren Creon. Creon drew a bases loaded walk to record her first career RBI and give Albion a 1-0 lead. Courtney Ellis followed with a walk of her own for a 2-0 Briton advantage. After a pitching change, sophomore Rachel Horecki brought in Miller with the third straight walk of the inning. Jacqueline Jozefczyk smacked a single to drive in Albion's fourth run of the day, plenty for Pion.

Pion (1-0) was masterful in the circle, striking out 14 hitters over seven innings of work. The senior scattered six hits while walking none.

GAME TWO: Albion 11 NVU-Lyndon 0 (5 innings)

Two big innings were all the Britons needed, pushing across four in the second and seven in the fourth.

In the bottom of the second, Douglass and Creon singled, coupled with an error to load the bases for Ellis. The transfer delivered in a big way, lifting a triple to left center, clearing the bases and giving Albion a 3-0 lead. Senior Lizzie Bissett added an RBI groundout to plate Ellis to round out the frame.

Creon smashed a one out triple in the fourth and was brought in on a single by Ellis. After Bissett walked, Jozefczyk singled up the middle to load the bases. Senior outfielder Kenadie Baareman drove in Ellis for a 6-0 advantage.

One batter later, sophomore Megan Maiuri cleared the bases, belting a double to left. The rally was capped off with a two-run single off the bat of Douglass.

Gabrielle Hirkaway (1-0) earned the win, pitching five innings of shutout ball. The sophomore struck out four while walking only one in the win.

Ellis finished with a team-high four RBI in the nightcap.

On Monday, the Britons will take on NVU-Lyndon again at 10 a.m., followed by University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
