Giesige takes no-no into seventh, Brits split in Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Freshman Cole Giesige threw 6.2 innings of no hit baseball, helping the Albion College baseball team earn a split over Franklin College. After the Grizzlies dominated a 15-4 opener, Giesige launched the Brits into a 4-1 win.

GAME ONE: Franklin 15 Albion 4

With Albion recording just four hits in the opener, the story was all Franklin. Austyn Stephens and Patrick Merolla drove RBI singles in the contest, accounting for half of Albion's runs.

The Brit pitching staff struggled in the first game, allowing 10 walks while only striking out four batters.

In the field, Albion committed three errors.

GAME TWO: Albion 4 Franklin 1

With Giesige on the bump dealing a no-hitter, the Albion offense slugged 12 hits. In the fourth, Matt McGann singled up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, the junior was driven in by a RBI single to left off the bat of Braeden Emery for a 1-0 lead.

The Britons tacked onto their lead in the top of the sixth. Senior first baseman Mark Lauro led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. With two away, the Grizzlies committed an error that allowed Lauro to cross for a 2-0 advantage.

Lauro came in clutch in the seventh, lacing a two-out RBI single to right, driving in Merolla.

In the sixth, Giesige's pitch count was well over 100 and the Brits opted to pull the freshman with two away. Sophomore Brayden Raether came in to get the last out, despite allowing a RBI hit that was charged to Giesige. After seven, Albion still held a 3-1 lead.

Albion got that run back in the top of the ninth, ignited by a one-out double from Ryker Mazey. After a wild pitch moved the sophomore to third, Stephens lifted a sac fly to bring in Mazey for a three run cushion.

Giesige (1-2) earns the first win for the Brits this season, as well as the first in his collegiate career. The freshman allowed no hits while striking out seven in the win.

Raether picked up the save, throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out one while allowing two hits.

On Sunday, the teams will face off in the rubber match for a 12 p.m. start.
