Baseball drops rubber match in Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Leaving eight runners stranded, the Albion College baseball team dropped the rubber match of a weekend series against Franklin. In the final game of the set, the Grizzlies took a 5-3 decision from the Britons.

Franklin took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first for a quick strike. Albion would tie the game two innings later.

Sophomore Carson Dunn hit a ground rule double to lead off the frame and moved 90 feet when Patrick Merolla lifted a fly ball to right field. With the lineup turned over, Ryker Mazey laced a single up the middle to drive in Dunn and cut the deficit in half.

With Mazey on third and two away, Mark Lauro singled up the middle to drive in Mazey and tied the game up at two.

The Grizzlies took a 4-2 lead in the seventh, recording three hits, including a pair of doubles. Franklin added an insurance run in the eighth for a 5-2 lead with three outs to play.

In the ninth, Albion scored an unearned run when Jack Lasceski scored on a throwing error, but the Britons would leave the tying runs in scoring position with a flyout to end the game.

Matt McGann drew three walks in the game.

Albion will begin a four game series with Bluffton on Saturday. The doubleheader in Ohio is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
