Game Recap: Baseball |

McGann drives in four at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio – A large lead got away from the Albion College baseball team and game two was suspended on Monday as the Brits competed against Bluffton University. In game one, the Brits squandered away an 8-3 lead, falling 9-8. In game two, the game was halted in the seventh with the Beavers holding a 10-3 lead.

GAME ONE: Bluffton 9 Albion 8

Albion threw the first punches in game one, scoring four runs early on. In the second, Braeden Emery singled up the middle and moved all the way to third when Carson Dunn doubled to center. One batter later, freshman Logan Farmer hit into an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.

The Brits tacked on three runs off three hits in the top of the third with the big blow coming from Matt McGann. Ryker Mazey doubled to left and came around to score off a two-out single from Mark Lauro. McGann followed Lauro by belting his first home run of the season for a 4-0 Albion lead.

Aided by two Briton errors, Bluffton scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Albion lead to one. The Britons got that run back in the sixth when McGann led off with a triple and Emery singled him home.

Evan Schuster led off the seventh with a home run, the freshman's first collegiate long ball. Later in the frame, McGann roped a 2-run base knock to center to give the Britons an 8-3 cushion.

Bluffton struck for six unanswered runs in the eighth – all with two outs – to push the hosts ahead.

Cole Giesige (ND) struck out seven hitters through 3.2 innings on the bump. Emery and McGann led the visitors with three hits apiece.

GAME TWO: Bluffton 10 Albion 3 (7th inning)

The Beavers scored three in the first and five in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Albion finally got on the board in the sixth inning, grinding for three runs.

McGann was hit by a pitch and advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Emery's big day continued with a base hit, driving in McGann to put the Britons on the board. With Emery at second, sophomore Austyn Stephens doubled to the left field line to plate the second run of the inning. Sawyer Shotwell followed with a single to center, driving home Stephens for an 8-3 Beaver lead.

Bluffton added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before the game was suspended. The game will resume when Albion hosts Bluffton on Apr. 10.
