Game Recap: Baseball |

Mazey, McGann, Mata lead baseball on FL Day 3

AUBURNDALE, Fla.-- A late comeback fell short as the Albion College baseball team was swept by Moravian University in Florida. The Greyhounds took the first game, 6-1, and then closed out the sweep with a 12-11 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Moravian 6 Albion 1

Albion's bats were near-silenced in game one, as they only produced two hits in the loss. Ryker Mazey had the first hit – an opposite field shot, before Braeden Emery belted a no-doubt home run to left on a 2-0 count.

Moravian scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to win game one.

GAME TWO: Moravian 12 Albion 11

In one of the highest scoring seven inning games you'll see, the Albion rally fell just short as the teams traded blows and crooked numbers.

The Britons got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Jack Lasceski led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Junior Gabe Mata drove in Lasceski with an RBI groundout.

In the third, Albion added to the lead when Emery smacked a one out single. After stealing second, Emery came home two batters later when Logan Farmer ripped a two-out single to right center.

Moravian put up a monstrous fourth inning, scoring eight runs off 10 hits and no Albion errors. In the home half of the fifth, the Brits scratched across two runs. Matt McGann led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Both Lasceski and Farmer worked walks to load the bases for Mata. The junior lifted a sac fly into center, driving in McGann. Two batters later, Ryker Mazey's hot hitting continued with an RBI single to left.

The Greyhounds went on to plate four in the sixth to take a 12-4 lead.

Albion answered right back with a six run inning. Mark Lauro and Emery started the inning off with walks before a McGann base hit drove in a run. Lasceski doubled down the left field line and Farmer drew a walk to load the bases. On the first pitch, Mata was drilled to send home McGann and bring the Brits within five.

Carson Dunn then stepped to the plate, lifting a sac fly to score Laseski. Mazey followed with a hit that just stayed fair, hitting third base and bringing in a run. Austyn Stephens rounded out the scoring with another sac fly, as the Brits trailed 12-10 after six.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lasceski drew a two-out walk before Farmer blasted a double to right. Farmer was then thrown out 9-4-5 to end the threat and end the rally.

The Britons slugged 13 hits, with five hitters recorded a multi-hit game. Mazey led the way going 3 for 4, while Mata drove in a team-best three runs.

Albion will continue its spring trip on Friday with a 10:30 a.m. game against Carthage.
