Game Recap: Softball |

Pion becomes strikeout leader, hits 400Ks

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – There is a new name atop the record books for career strikeouts in Albion College softball.

Fanning seven on Saturday, senior Ashley Pion broke an 18-year old record, becoming Albion's all-time leader in career strikeouts. Pion not only broke the record of 397, but reached the 400 club on the afternoon.

Albion fell in two one-run games on Saturday – an extra inning heartbreaker and a seventh inning comeback going the wrong way.

GAME ONE: Gettysburg 1 Albion 0 (8 innings)

Unable to get anything going offensively in a pitcher's duel, the Brits dropped their opener on a two out walkoff bunt. With the international tie breaker in effect, Albion left the go-ahead run stranded at third in the top of the eighth.

In the home half of the frame, the Bullets used a two-out perfectly placed bunt to score the winning run.

Ashley Pion (3-3) was phenomenal on the mound, striking out seven hitters while allowing just three hits.

The Britons recorded just two hits in the game – off the bats of outfielders Jacqueline Jozefczyk and Kenadie Baareman

GAME TWO: Martin Luther 2 Albion 1

Albion scored the first run of the game, courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Megan Maiuri. The unearned run drove in Mya Nummer for a 1-0 Briton lead after three.

Martin Luther struck for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh – both coming on a two-out base hit. Albion got the tying run aboard in the home half of the seventh, but could not advance into scoring position.

Albion will have a week off before beginning play up north. On Mar. 13, the Britons will head to Oberlin for a doubleheader commencing at 3:30 p.m.
