Pitching staff strikes out record 22 batters in win at Olivet

Cole Giesige fanned 17 -- also an Albion record -- in 7.0 innings

OLIVET, Mich. – Cole Giesige. Welcome to the record books.

On Wednesday, the freshman hurled seven scoreless innings, striking out a single game record 17 in the Albion College baseball team's 8-2 win over Olivet College. In addition, the Briton pitching staff recorded 22 of the 27 outs via the strikeout – also an Albion single game record. The 22 strikeouts is tied for the second most in NCAA history in a nine inning game. Teddy Brimblecombe and Ray Keane will also have their names in history, as they threw the final two innings. Brimblecome struck out two in the eighth, as Keane retired the side in order on strikeouts in the ninth.

With Giesige dealing, Albion got a run for its starter in the third. Sawyer Shotwell reached on a fielder's choice and swiped second. With two away, sophomore Ryker Mazey singled up the middle to give the Brits a 1-0 lead.

Albion plated three in the fourth, courtesy of Travis Weide's first collegiate home run. Weide's long ball drove in Braeden Emery and Austyn Stephens for a 4-0 lead.

The Brits tacked on an unearned run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Despite the hosts scoring a pair in the bottom of the eighth, the Britons answered with two more in the ninth. Matt McGann smoked a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Emery. Later in the inning, Carson Dunn lifted a sac fly to left, driving in Stephens.

With the weekend weather not as favorable as it has been the last week, the Brits will now host Adrian for the single game on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
