Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX puts on offensive clinic in front of packed house

Sam Puzevic's 10 points helped Albion past Hope

ALBION – A dominant third quarter, a 10 point night from their captain and the fourth straight game netting 20 or more goals led the Albion College men's lacrosse team to a 21-12 victory over Hope College. After being tied at halftime, the Briton offense erupted for a 10 goal third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Senior Sam Puzevic led all scorers with 10 points – seven goals and three assists. The 10 points ties a career-best for the captain. Fellow attackmen Jace Conley and Ethan Rottell did plenty of damage, as each player scored five goals while Rottell added one assist.

MIAA Defensive Player of the Week, Eddie Symons, made his case for another award, going 29 of 36 from the faceoff X. He picked up 23 ground balls in the win. Jack Gogonis (8-3) was stellar in goal, making 18 saves.

Hope broke out to an early 3-0 lead, but an unfazed and resilient Briton squad netted four goals in the final 5:23 of the opening quarter. Goals by Rottell and Puzevic were followed with goals by Conley and a second from Puzevic.

In the second, Albion's goals came from their version of a "Big Three" – Rottell, Conley and Puzevic. After the first half, the teams were deadlocked at seven apiece.

Out of the half, the Britons – in front of a packed house with crowds surrounding the entire field – put on a show with 10 goals in the frame. Two straight by Rottell were followed by Timmy Salinas's first of the game. 20 seconds later, freshman Marcus Haynie got in the scorebook with a goal to put the Brits up 11-9.

Albion ended the third quarter on a 5-0 run to hold a decisive 17-10 lead after three. In addition to Puzevic and Conley, Matt Montgomery and Cal Stearns added goals in the fourth quarter.

"We're really happy with the win and it's great to be 2-0 in the league," said head coach, Jake DeCola.  "A lot of people put a lot of stress on this game and that it could be No. 1 vs. No. 2, but we're not thinking about that. We know we've got great teams to play next week and we know this will all be decided at the end of the month. We're just looking forward to getting better everyday."

The Britons outshot the Dutchmen, 67-44. Albion improves to 9-3 overall, 2-0 in the MIAA.

With the league bye this weekend, Albion will be back in action on Apr. 18 at Trine University. First faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
