Emery, Lauro go yard in win over Olivet

ALBION – A two home run inning propelled the Albion College baseball team to an 11-1 win over Olivet College. Sophomore southpaw Sean Cooper tossed seven innings, allowing no earned runs while fanning eight in the win.

Austyn Stephens and Braeden Emery combined to go a perfect 5 for 5, driving in two runs and walking twice. In the bottom of the fifth, both Emery and Mark Lauro crushed long balls – both no-doubters.

In the bottom of the second, Emery was plunked to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, Stephens laced a single to right center, plating Emery for a 1-0 lead. Albion tacked on another run in the home half of the third, as freshman Travis Weide doubled home Lauro.

After Matt McGann smoked an RBI triple down the right field line in the fourth, the Britons exploded for a six spot in the fifth. Emery led off the frame with a no-doubt long ball to left, increasing the Briton lead to 4-1.

Stephens followed with a single and Sawyer Shotwell drew a walk. The pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Ryker Mazey lifted a sac fly to plate Stephens. On the first pitch of his at bat, Patrick Merolla lined a screamer to left, driving in Shotwell for a 6-1 Albion lead.

Merolla later came around to score on a hustle double to right center off the bat of Carson Dunn. Lauro followed it up with a deep drive to right for a 2-run home run and capping off the scoring in the inning.

Two wild pitches allowed Albion to cross in the sixth, putting them over the 10 run limit.

Lauro finished with a 2 for 4, 2 RBI afternoon.

Cooper (1-4) threw seven innings, allowing one unearned run. His eight strikeouts are a new career-best.

Albion begins its series against Hope on Thursday. First pitch in Albion is scheduled for 4 p.m.
