McGann's perfect day leads baseball to Trine sweep

ALBION – A perfect day from Matt McGann helped the Albion College baseball team sweep the season series with Trine University, taking the final game 7-5. The junior catcher went 4 for 4 with an RBI in the win.

Carson Dunn led off the game with a single through the left side on an 0-2 count and moved to second on a single by McGann. After a fielder's choice advanced him to third, he later scored on a sac fly from Austyn Stephens to give the Brits a 1-0 lead through one.

Evan Schuster beat on an infield single in the second and moved when Patrick Merolla followed with a single of his own. An errant throw on a fielder's choice later allowed Schuster to cross, doubling the Albion lead. McGann followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage.

Trine scored one in the third and added another in the fourth, trimming the Albion lead to one run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Britons plated a pair. Stephens was plunked with the bases loaded, bringing in McGann. Two batters later, freshman Travis Weide lifted a sac fly to right field, driving in Mark Lauro for a 5-2 lead.

The Thunder had an immediate response in the sixth, getting those two runs back. After six innings, the Britons were clinging to a 5-4 advantage.

Albion plated a pair of much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff single from Braeden Emery immediately went to use. With the runner in motion, Weide cranked a double down the left field line, allowing Emery to score from first for a 6-4 lead.

Later in the frame, Merolla stole second, and as the throw went through to try and nab the senior, Schuster came home to build the lead to 7-4.

Trine scratched across an unearned run in the ninth, but their momentum would be halted there.

Sophomore Luke Robertson (2-1) earned the win in relief for Albion. He threw 3.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven. Daniel Bruzdewicz started the game, going 2.2 innings and striking out three.

Sean Cooper tossed the final three, allowing an unearned run.

Albion will play at Calvin on Friday in the final MIAA series of the season. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
