Game Recap: Softball |

Softball sends seniors off with sweep

ALBION – What a way to celebrate Senior Day.

Honoring its six seniors prior to the doubleheader, the Albion College softball team swept Olivet College, 8-0 and 11-1. Albion recognized Lilly Patillo, Lizzie Bissett, Ashley Pion, Mya Nummer, Kenadie Baareman and Shanyn Jewell for their contributions to the program in pregame.

GAME ONE: Albion 8 Olivet 0

It didn't take long for the Britons to get on the board, as Patillo started her Senior Day off right. Jacqueline Jozefczyk started the game with a double to center and Courtney Ellis was walked. Patillo launched a two-bagger to left, driving in both runners for a 2-0 lead through one.

Albion struck for five runs in the second. Baareman led off the frame with a double to left and Lauren Creon followed with a single. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Nummer slapped a single up the middle, plating Baareman and Creon for a 4-0 advantage.

Two batters later, Ellis smacked a double of her own to center, driving in two Albion runners to build the lead to 7-0. Prior to the hit, an Olivet error provided Albion with another run.

The Britons went over the run rule threshold in the fourth, as Bissett recorded an RBI on her Senior Day with a base hit to center.

Pion (7-8) turned in another incredible performance, allowing just one hit in the shutout. The NCAA leader in K/BBB ratio, Pion fanned eight while walking none. She now has 135 this season which leads the MIAA.

GAME TWO: Albion 11 Olivet 1

In the nightcap, the Brits struck for seven runs in the top of the first, proving to be plenty to complete the Sunday sweep.

With the bases loaded and one away, Chloe Miller drew a walk to give Albion its first run. Baareman followed with a single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.

In a string of five straight hits, Creon followed to drive in Patillo. Sophomore Megan Mairui lined a base hit up the middle, bringing home Baareman and Miller as the Britons took a 5-0 lead in the early goings. Bissett's Senior Day continued to impress, as she tripled to center, driving in Maiuri. The scoring was capped off when Jozefczyk drove in Bissett.

Olivet's lone run came in the first, but Albion would answer back with four runs later in the contest.

Patillo was plunked with the bases loaded in the third to inflate the Briton lead to 8-1. In the sixth, Albion struck for three more runs to put the run rule into effect.

Creon led off with a double and a bunt single by Maiuri put runners at the corners for Bissett. The senior doubled home both runners for a 10-1 lead. After an error allowed the final Briton run to cross, Albion was three outs away from completing the sweep.

Bissett led the Britons with three RBI in the game. Five of the nine hitters in the lineup recorded two hits in the second game.

Gabrielle Hirkaway (4-7) went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits over six innings of work.

Albion will travel to Alma on Wednesday for games at 3 and 5 p.m.
