Softball settles for split with Manchester

ALBION – After cranking out 17 hits in game one, the Albion College softball team settled for a split with Manchester University. The Britons took game one via run rule, 11-3, before the Spartans claimed a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 11 Manchester 3 (6 innings)

Albion got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Jacqueline Jozefczyk reached on an error and was later safe on a fielder's choice. The sloppy defense continued for Manchester, as an infield fly dropped, retiring the batter but heads up baserunning by Jozefczyk and Courtney Ellis moved the runners up 60 feet. Jozefczyk came around to score on a wild pitch, as Ellis was driven in on a RBI single off the bat of Parker Douglass

Manchester answered for one in the fourth, but the Brits responded with a three spot in the home half of the frame. An error and two singles loaded the bases with nobody out for Jozefczyk. The junior delivered with a base hit to center, driving in pinch runner Grace Martin for a 3-1 lead.

Ellis followed with another single up the middle, bringing in Mya Nummer and Lauren Creon to extend the Albion lead to 5-1.

Once again, the Spartans had a response in the top of the new inning. The visitors plated two before the Britons exploded for four more runs.

With one out and two on, Creon smashed a double to the gap in left center to drive in Chloe Miller and Megan Maiuri. Jozefczyk tacked on an RBI infield single and Ellis with a run scoring double, pushing the hosts ahead, 9-3 after five.

In the sixth, Albion went over the run rule when Nummer lined a single to right, giving the Britons an 11-3 victory.

Senior Ashley Pion was masterful in the circle, striking out nine in six innings of work. The senior allowed no earned runs, walking only one in the win.

All nine batters in the Albion lineup recorded a hit in the win.

GAME TWO: Manchester 6 Albion 1

Albion's lone run came in the bottom of the first. Chloe Miller drove a two-out single to left, bringing home Kenadie Baareman

All six Spartan runs came in the top of the fourth. In the contest, Manchester racked up 12 hits off of three Albion pitchers.

The Briton offense struggled in the night cap, as Jozefczyk recorded two of the four Albion hits.
