Softball splits in conference opener

ALBION – In their MIAA debut, the Albion College softball team split with St. Mary's College on Saturday afternoon. The Britons shut out the Belles in the opener, 5-0, before dropping a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 5 St. Mary's 0

Opening MIAA action, the Britons got on the board with a three spot in the second inning. Both Lilly Patillo and Dylan Cardinale drew walks, as Hannah Petty came in to pinch run for Patillo. Sophomore Megan Maiuri singled up the middle to load the bases for Lauren Creon

The freshman, Creon, delivered with a base hit to center, driving in Patillo and Cardinale for a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Jacqueline Jozefczyk smacked a single to left, plating Creon for a 3-0 Briton advantage.

Albion's other two runs came in the fourth inning, courtesy of a double off the bat of Patillo. The pair of unearned runs lifted Albion to a 5-0 lead.

The five run cushion would prove to be enough, as Ashley Pion hurled a shutout on the day. Pion scattered eight hits through seven innings, striking out four and walking none.

GAME TWO: St. Mary's 4 Albion 1

Batting as the visitors, the Britons struck first in the top of the second. Back to back doubles from Chloe Miller and Creon helped Albion take a 1-0 lead early on.

St. Mary's struck for three runs in the bottom of the third to take the momentum back from Albion. The Belles used a four hit frame to take the lead before tacking on an insurance run in the fifth.

On Tuesday, the Brits travel to Calvin University for another conference twinbill. Game one will begin at 3 p.m.
