ALBION – Despite an early lead, the Albion College baseball team was swept by Alma College in the series finale. The Scots rallied from a late deficit to win game one, 8-4, before commanding the entire second game en route to a 13-3 win.
In game one, Albion got on the board first thanks to a no doubt homer off the bat of Braeden Emery. A pair of freshmen added to the scoreboard in the frame, as Evan Schuster singled and stole second, before being driven in on a single from Travis Weide.
Senior first baseman Mark Lauro laced a single to right center in the seventh, giving Albion a 3-0 lead. Lauro drove in Patrick Merolla, who singled and swiped second and third.
Alma rallied for five runs in the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. The Britons got one back in the home half of the inning when Austyn Stephens scored on a balk. In the top of the ninth, the Scots put the game out of reach with three more runs.
Lauro and Schuster led the Brits with two hits each.
Alma opened game two with a 10-0 lead through three and a half and never looked back. Albion had just five hits in the nightcap – two coming from Matt McGann.
Stephens drove in two runs in the contests, both via sac fly.
On Tuesday, the Brits will make up a doubleheader with Kalamazoo at home. Game times will be at 2 and 5 p.m.
