Baseball sends seniors out with win in final game

ALBION – Rallying for a split, the Albion College baseball team wrapped up its 2023 season on Saturday afternoon. Between games, Albion honored its five seniors – Mark Lauro, Pete Loch, Ray Keane, Patrick Merolla and Louis Cardinale III

GAME ONE: Calvin 17 Albion 5

After putting up an 8-spot in the top of the first, the Knights held momentum for most of the game.

Albion's first run came in the bottom of the first, as Patrick Merolla worked a leadoff walk. After advancing to second on a balk, the senior came around to score on a two-out double off the bat of Carson Dunn

Albion added another in the third when Merolla led off the frame with a single. After a walk to Matt McGann, freshman Travis Weide lined an opposite field single to drive in Merolla.

Albion's final three runs came in the fourth, two courtesy of a double off the bat of McGann.

GAME TWO: Albion 9 Calvin 7

The Knights struck first in the top of the first inning and added a pair in the fourth before the Britons took a 5-3 lead after five.

With one away, Dunn worked a walk and McGann was hit by a pitch. Lauro smoked a double down the right field line, driving home Dunn for Albion's first run of the game. Sophomore Austyn Stephens followed it up with a single to left center, bringing in both runners to tie the game at three.

One batter later, Braeden Emery crushed a triple to right center, giving Albion the lead as Stephens came home. Freshman Evan Schuster capped off the five run inning with a RBI single to give the Britons the lead.

Calvin answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Albion had an answer, striking for four in the home half of the inning.

Dunn led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a bunt single from Garrett Draper, coupled with a Calvin error. With runners at the corners, Stephens hit an RBI groundout to push the lead to 7-5.

Jack Lasceski gave the Britons a two-run cushion by driving in a pair to end the scoring.

Brayden Raether earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out four. Sean Cooper threw the final 3.2 innings to keep the Britons victorious.
