Swaton's hat trick vaults MSOC in first road match

The senior netted three goals for the first Albion hat trick since 2015.

CHICAGO, Ill. – Brett Swaton's first career hat trick was the highlight in the Albion College men's soccer team's 6-1 pummeling over Concordia-Chicago. The hat trick was the first for the Brits since Bobby Budlong on Sep. 5, 2015 at Capital University.

In his first game back from injury, Grady Lycan got the Britons on the board first. After a scoreless 20 minutes, the senior scored in the 23rd minute. Awarded a free kick just outside the box, Lycan's left footed low strike beat the CUC keeper to his right for an early 1-0 advantage.

The first of Swaton's three goals came in the 28th minute. Albion's initial cross was punched out by the CUC keeper. The ball landed right at the feet of Swaton at the top of the box, who one-touched it into the net for a 2-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Drew Barker played a gorgeous ball ahead to the senior, who beat the entire Cougar defense for his second goal and a 3-0 lead.

Albion's advantage inflated to 4-0 before halftime, as Liam Boyle and Tristen Spettel recorded their first collegiate points. Spettel played a ball into the box from the right side, and Boyle buried it home on the weak side, giving the Britons a large lead through 45 minutes.

Concordia got on the board early in the second half, but Swaton was able to answer, taking the ball down field himself, beating plenty of Cougar defenders. At the tail end of the run, Swaton scored his third of the day for his hat trick.

Jasek Zielaskowski registered his first collegiate goal and the freshman scored late in the contest. Zielaskowski finished a ball played into the box from Arnav Tamang

Freshman Dario Vujic earned the win in goal, making three saves. Jake Ellsworth played the final 18 minutes, totaling a pair of saves.

Albion now stands at 2-1-0 this year.

On Friday, the Brits will host Manchester University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
