Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Upset bid falls short against No. 4 Calvin

ALBION – A slim halftime lead was not quite enough for an upset bid as the Albion College men's basketball team dropped a 78-69 decision to No. 4 Calvin University. The Britons saw a 37-34 halftime advantage evaporate, despite a strong showing against one of the nation's top powers.

Sophomore Kam Mayes continues to shine, scoring 23 points. Mayes was 8 of 14 from the floor and a perfect 5 for 5 from the foul line. Four other Britons finished in double figures. Marco Lucchesi added 11 points while AJ Barden, Nathan Steinman and Bryce Esman all scored 10.

Knotted at 31 late in the first half, Lucchesi's midrange game showed up with a basket to push the Brits ahead. In just his third game at Albion, Esman was incredibly impactful, scoring on the next possession to vault the hosts up by four. A Steinman basket secured a six six point advantage, but a buzzer beating heave from the Knights sliced the lead to just three by halftime.

Back and forth throughout the opening moments of the new half, Calvin took the lead for good with a 3-pointer with just under 13 minutes on the clock. The Knights inflated their lead to as large at 10 points with Albion unable to answer down the stretch.

With five rebounds, Jaylen Flaniken led Albion on the glass. Lucchesi, Barden and Beck Willems all brought down four.

Both teams were efficient from the floor, seeing Calvin connect on almost 53 percent of its shots. The Brits logged a 49 percent mark from the field in the loss.

In its MIAA opener, Albion slips to a 6-6 overall mark, 0-1 in the league. Calvin moves to 11-1 on the year, 1-0 in MIAA action.

Albion will follow up the women's game with a 3 p.m. tipoff at Adrian on Saturday.
