Alma hands football first MIAA loss

ALMA, Mich. – A feverish comeback fell just short, as the Albion College football team dropped a 40-30 decision to Alma College.

Luke Lovell was 25 of 36 for 339 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Fifth year Colby Taylor-Browning had a career day on the ground, rushing for 110 yards on 15 carries. Dilon Denison led the Briton wideouts with nine catches for 118 yards.

Defensively, the Britons were led by Adam Mills's 12 total tackles. Davon Pearson and Jayth Joseph each contributed 10 tackles as well.

Trailing 20-0 early on, the Britons got a spark from their defense. With Alma in their own territory, a fumble was forced and recovered by Pearson at the 30 and returned for a touchdown. After an Alma field goal, the Brits found the end zone for the first time offensively. Lovell connected with junior Cameron Moore for a 17-yard score. The 23-13 margin held going into halftime.

Albion cut the deficit to a one score game early in the third quarter when Logan Grwinski sailed a 33-yard field goal through the uprights. Holding the Scots to three points at the other end, the Britons closed the gap. With 4:33 left in the third, Lovell escaped from pressure and unloaded a 74-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Armstrong to make it 26-23 in favor of the hosts.

Alma tacked on a touchdown before the end of the period to regain a 10-point lead. Lovell found Denison late in the fourth quarter for a big touchdown strike, trailing 33-30. Albion's next drive would end in an interception, which Alma would capitalize on and add seven more points.

Albion returns to its home field next weekend for a 1 p.m. contest against Kalamazoo.
