CTB's big day leads football over Hornets

ALBION – It got the job done.

Plagued by penalties in costly moments, the Albion College football team found a way to prevail 28-23 over Kalamazoo College. A big-time blocked punt by freshman Alex Trudell led to a massive momentum shift for the Brits.

Luke Lovell's incredible completion percentage only went up, converting 26 of 30 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Colby Taylor-Browning had a monster day, rushing for 117 yards on 19 carries.

Jayth Joseph led the Briton defense with eight total tackles, 2.5 for loss. Tight end-turned linebacker Connor Davey added seven tackles in the win. Miguel Ocampo and Davon Pearson each finished with three pass breakups.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Brits broke the scoreless tie with a 7-yard rush from Curtis Hamilton. Logan Grwinski – who was a perfect 4 for 4 on PATs – gave the hosts a 7-0 lead. Before the half, Kalamazoo scored to put both teams locked at 7-7.

The Brits took the lead midway through the third, as Lovell found CJ Weems Jr. over the middle for a 6-yard score. Kalamazoo found the end zone just two plays later, but a failed PAT kept the Britons ahead. Albion immediately answered with another touchdown – this one from Taylor-Browning to take a 21-13 lead heading into the final quarter.

Kalamazoo opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, keeping the hosts within striking distance. On their next possession, the punt was blocked by Trudell before Brendan Mercier recovered at the Kalamazoo 10 yard line. It took Lovell just two snaps before finding Weems Jr. for a second time, extending the lead to 28-16.

Dilon Denison led Albion's receivers with five catches for 55 yards. 10 different Britons caught passes in the win.

Next Saturday, Albion heads to No. 17 Hope College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
