Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mercado's hat trick helps MSOC draw with Calvin

ALBION – Bolstered by Esteban Mercado's hat trick, the Albion College men's soccer team battled to a 3-3 draw with regional power Calvin University. The freshman netted all of Albion's goals – including the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

Mercado got the hosts on the board in the 38th minute. Mercado's initial shot was saved by the Calvin keeper, but the rebound bounced right back, burying it for a 1-0 lead. The score would hold into halftime.

Just six minutes into the new period, Mercado doubled the Albion advantage. Brayden Stavros played a beautiful ball ahead to Mercado, who scorched a shot to the lower right of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Calvin was awarded a penalty kick just a few moments later, capitalizing to cut the lead in half. Four minutes later, the Knights netted the equalizer in the 64th minute. The visitors took the lead with 15 minutes remaining, coming off another PK.

A gritty Briton squad regrouped, seeing Mercado score once again. Senior captain Nick Miller provided the assist, helping Albion finish with one point in conference action from the contest.

Despite being outshot significantly, the Britons found a way to remain even with the Knights. Freshman goalkeeper Tom Veresh was lights out, recording a career-best 16 saves.

The Britons head to The University of Olivet on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
