Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Six in double figures as MBB wins season opener

ALBION – A balanced effort led the Albion College men's basketball team to an 87-75 win over Illinois Tech. Six Britons scored in double figures, lifting Albion to a win in their season debut.

Albion was led by sophomore Kurtis Rhodes, turning in 14 points on the evening. Both Marco Lucchesi and Kam Mayes added 13 points apiece.

Erasing an early double-digit deficit, a three from BJ Hunter ignited a spark into the Brits. Mayes followed with back to back buckets, cutting the IIT lead to four midway through the first half. With 7:44 to play in the first half, Albion regained the lead and would not trail for the remainder of the contest.

Lucchessi and Mayes ended the period with baskets, seeing Albion hold a 45-38 advantage at the half.

Despite the Scarlet Hawks trimming the lead to two, Albion regained its composure and used a 10-0 run to create distance from the visitors. In the run, Albion received 3-pointers from Lucchesi and Dwayne Ray

Fifth year AJ Barden added 12 points, as Michael Umeh scored a career-high 11. Hunter was the sixth Brit in double figures, tallying 10 points in the win.

Mayes finished a rebound shy of a double-double, while Barden totaled eight boards. All 10 players that checked into the game for the Brits scored at least one point.

Bolstered by Lucchesi and Rhodes, Albion's bench outscored IIT's 48-5. Albion added 19 second chance points thanks to 20 offensive boards, but limited the Scarlet Hawks to four second chance points and just six offensive rebounds.

On Tuesday, Albion heads to Manchester University for a 7 p.m. tip off.
