Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX opens 2024 with win over Otterbein

ALBION – Led by a career day from Andrew Miller, the Albion College men's lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter surge to defeat Otterbein University, 9-7. Miller recorded his first collegiate hat trick, leading all players with three goals.

Five minutes into the contest, the Britons held a 2-0 lead. Ethan Rottell got the Brits on the board first with a goal off a pass from Brock Yabs. Two minutes later was Miller's first goal, an unassisted strike for the early lead. Albion took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter as Yabs connected with sophomore Cal Stearns for the co-captain's first goal of the season.

After winning the faceoff in the second, Stearns found Robbie Dameron to push the hosts ahead 4-1. Three minutes later came Miller's second goal, assisted by Timmy Salinas for a 5-1 advantage. A goal from the Cardinals was quickly answered by Miller's third goal coming from Dameron to regain a four goal lead. 90 seconds later Marcus Haynie scored his first goal of the season from Stearns, as a late Otterbein goal saw the Brits leading 7-3 at halftime.

Each team netted one goal in the third period, as Albion's lone goal came from Yabs. Yabs was one of three Albion players to finish with three points (Miller, Stearns).

Otterbein scored twice early in the fourth to cut the Albion lead to 8-6. Salinas, the second Albion captain, answered with a goal with 10:21 to play to push the hosts back up by three. Despite the Cardinals scoring immediately after the Salinas strike, the Briton defense held tough for the remaining 9:44.

Senior Bradley Luketic (1-0) earned the win in goal, making 15 saves and causing six turnovers. Logan Bonner (four CT) and Logan Bride (three CT) were incredible on defense, combining for seven caused turnovers. Bride and Luketic led the Brits with four ground balls apiece.

The Cardinals committed 32 turnovers compared to 20 from the Britons. Albion was also an efficient 24 of 29 on the clear. Otterbein struggled, converting 17 of 32 clears.

Next Saturday, the Brits host the back half of a doubleheader when they welcome No. 14 Denison. First faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
