Game Recap: Baseball |

Upsets fall short on opening day

WESTFIELD, Ind. – A late letdown and a rally that came up short hurt the Albion College baseball team on opening day. Junior transfer Kris Stojanovski tallied three hits on the day, including a home run and driving in four.

GAME ONE: Marian 5 Albion 3

Albion broke out to a 3-0 lead through five, but Marian pushed across five runs in the final four innings to steal the win from the Brits. In the bottom of the first, Cason Dunn drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Three batters later, Kris Stojanovski drove in Dunn for a 1-0 lead after one.

In the fifth, the Britons plated two more. After drawing a leadoff walk, sophomore Garrett Draper stole second. After a walk to Lauro, Stojanovaski smacked his second hit to load the bases for Austyn Stephens. The junior drove in a pair with a single for 3-0 Albion lead.

Marian responded in the top of the sixth with three unearned runs. The Britons committed two errors in the frame to aid Marian. In the ninth, Marian added two more to take a 5-3 lead. Albion had the tying runs in scoring position with the winning run at the plate, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Sophomore Cole Giesige (ND), threw six innings and struck out eight.

GAME TWO: No. 15 Aurora 6 Albion 4

Aurora took a 5-0 lead before the Briton bats woke up and put up a 4-spot in the top of the eighth. Lauro and Sam Archambeau were walked as Braeden Emery was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Archambeau to score, cutting the Aurora lead to 5-1.

Stojanovski crushed his third hit of the afternoon – a 3-run home run – clearing the bases and bringing the Britons to within a run.

The Spartans answered in the bottom of the inning with a run to regain a two-run cushion.

Albion will resume action on Mar. 3 in Florida as part of their spring trip. The Brits open the week with a twinbill against Fontbonne and Dominican.
