Game Recap: Baseball |

Mazey's five hits not enough in slugfest

ALBION – In a slugfest of a home opener, the Albion College baseball team came up short in a 22-16 loss to Bluffton University. The Britons crushed 21 hits – 11 for extra bases in the loss.

Junior shortstop Ryker Mazey had a career day, going 5 for 6 with 4 RBI. Kris Stojanovski added a 3 for 4 day with 2 RBI and his sixth home run of the season.

Albion never held the lead, but battled throughout the contest. Bluffton pushed across seven runs in the top of the third to hold a 9-1 lead through two and a half. In the home half of the inning, the Britons rallied for four runs – including Stojanovski's home run.

In the list of things you never thought you'd see – Bluffton put up seven runs in the seventh before the Britons answered with 10 in the bottom of the frame. The 17-run inning lasted nearly 25 minutes, as both teams batted around.

Garrett Draper and Mazey started the inning with singles to go along with a walk drawn by Braeden Emery. Carson doubled to left, driving in Emery. Albion went on to score eight more runs – all with two outs – as Mark Lauro cranked his first home run of the season.

Albion moves to 7-5 on the young season.

Albion heads to Heidelberg for a doubleheader Saturday against the Student Princes. Game times are set for 1 and 4 p.m.
