Softball rallies to split against Heidelberg

ALBION – Plating 18 runs across two games, the Albion College softball team earned a split against Heidelberg University. After letting a lead slip and dropping game one 17-9, the Britons came from behind to win game two, 9-8.

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 17 Albion 9

In a slugfest opener, the Student Princes utilized two big innings late in the game to steal the game one victory from the Britons. Albion led 8-5 after four, but the Berg worked a big inning in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Courtney Ellis led Albion, going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI in the loss. Jacqueline Jozefczyk added a pair of hits and drove in two runs while scoring twice. Albion had just seven hits in the opener, with Jozefczyk and Ellis combining for four.

Alaina Brown (2-3) took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs in 4.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO: Albion 9 Heidelberg 8

It was the Lilly Zaskowski show in the nightcap, putting together a sparkling performance in the circle and at the dish. The freshman pitcher (6-1) earned the win while going 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBI.

Albion scored three in the bottom of the first, backed by a two-run home run off the bat of Kearney Miller. Heidelberg answered immediately with a five spot in the top of the second to take a 5-3 lead.

Trailing 7-3 in the sixth, the Britons worked to cut the deficit to one run. Ellis led off the inning with a single and Kiersten Wilkin followed with a single to left. With one away, Jessie Anstandig singled to lead the bases for Zaskowski. The freshman helped her own cause with a RBI single, bringing in Ellis.

After a fielder's choice brought in another run, the Britons capped off the rally with a RBI single from Megan Mairui.

In the bottom of the sixth, Albion erupted for three runs to take the lead for good. Singles by Jozefczyk and Wilkin along with a Heidelberg error loaded the bases for Miller. Miller worked a four pitch walk to bring the Brits to within a run. Anstandig lifted a fly ball to center, driving in Ellis for a sac fly and tying the game at eight.

Parker Douglass drove in the winning run with a sac fly to right, giving Albion a 9-8 lead.

Albion will have a week off before a twinbill at Bluffton University on Mar. 23.
