Emery's big day leads to split with Tigers

KENTWOOD, Mich. – Back in action on Monday, the Albion College baseball team split a doubleheader against Grace Christian University. The contests were two of three remaining before MIAA action commences this weekend.

GAME ONE: Albion 9 Grace Christian 1

In a seven inning contest, the Britons struck for four runs in the top of the second. Braeden Emery was hit to start off the frame and swiped second and third. He came around to score when Ryker Mazey singled to right for a 1-0 lead. The Brits continued to draw walks and reach base, before a sac fly off the bat of Matt McGann capped off the scoring or the inning.

Albion tacked on three more in the top of the third. Emery once again started the rally, smacking a double and stealing third before coming home on a Mazey RBI. Mazey came home when junior Carson Dunn lifted a sac fly to right field. Mark Lauro brought in the final run of the frame, driving in Sam Archambeau

RBI singles from the middle infield tandem of Emery and Mazey in the fourth rounded out the scoring. Mazey was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, while Emery and Kris Stojanovski all registered two hits. Emery stole three bases while Stojanovski finished with four.

Brayden Raether (2-3) earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings in relief.

GAME TWO: Grace Christian 7 Albion 6

A walkoff victory by the Tigers hurt the Britons in the nightcap, as GCU struck for two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

In the second game, three Albion players finished with two hits – Lauro, Dunn and Stojanovski. Both of Stojanovski's hits were doubles. In the top of the first inning, Lauro cranked a 2-run home run to give the visitors the early lead.

Both Lauro and McGann drove in a pair of runs for the Britons.

On Wednesday, Albion hosts Ohio Northern for a 4 p.m. start.
