Softball finishes break trip with sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Now that's how you end a trip.

On their final day of their spring break, the Albion College softball team won twice to improve to 8-4 on the season. In the opener, the Britons run-ruled Cedar Crest College before holding off Immaculata University in a 4-1 win.

GAME ONE: Albion 10 Cedar Crest 2

After giving up a pair of runs in the first, Albion immediately responded with 10 unanswered runs. Courtney Ellis walked and came around to score on a double off the bat of Megan Maiuri. Maiuri finished the game with three hits. A groundout tied the game after one.

In the home half of the third, Albion rallied for five runs off six hits as one CCC error helped. Maiuri, Lilly Zaskowski and Kiersten Wilkin singled before Hannah Petty had the big blow – a 2-run double to left center. One hitter later, Emma Schramm singled through the left side to drive in Zaskowski. Albion's run was capped off by a run-scoring single from Parker Douglass

It was Zaskowski and Petty who once again provided the damage for the Brits, each contributing RBI base knocks in the bottom of the fourth. Albion walked it off in the fifth when Kearney Miller laced a double to drive in the winning run.

Freshman Emilie Goldstein (1-0) saw her collegiate debut end in exciting fashion. Goldstein allowed just four hits through five innings, walking just one. Petty drove in three for a new career-high.

GAME TWO: Albion 4 Immaculata 1

Once again, Zaskowski was superb in the circle, allowing zero earned runs while picking up her fifth win of the season. The freshman scattered three hits over seven innings of work, fanning five.

An unearned run scored for the Mighty Macs in the first, but keeping their composure as they have all week, the Britons had an answer. Maiuri and Schramm singled in the third, before Douglass lifted a pinch hit sac fly to tie the game at one. One batter later, Wilkin reached on an error to give Albion a 2-1 lead.

Zaskowski provided herself a cushion in the circle with a RBI single in the fifth. Wilkin drove in the game's final run in the top half of the sixth inning.

The Britons will have over a week off to regroup and prepare for competition back up north, when they host Heidelberg University for a doubleheader on Mar. 16.
