Softball rallies for split against Defiance

ALBION – Backed by solid defense and good pitching, the Albion College softball team rallied for a split against Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets won the first game 9-6, before the Britons answered with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Defiance 9 Albion 6

Defiance scored the first three runs of the game in the top of the third, but the Britons immediately responded with four in the home half of the inning. Freshman Emma Schramm led off with a double to left and Rachel Horecki followed by beating out an infield single. Jacqueline Jozefczyk sent a hard single up the middle to load the bases.

Junior Kearney Miller drove in the first run with a single to left. Freshman Lilly Zaskowski followed by lacing a deep single the other way, bringing in both Horecki and Jozefczyk. Parker Douglass sent a pinch hit single up the middle to give the Britons a 4-3 lead and cap off the scoring through three.

A fielder's choice in the fourth boosted the Briton lead to 5-3. In the top of the fifth, Defiance struck for five runs to take a significant advantage. Both teams tacked on one more in the sixth, with Albion's coming off a Jessie Anstandig sac fly.

Freshman Alaina Brown earned a no decision in the circle, striking out six while allowing just two earned runs.

GAME TWO: Albion 4 Defiance 2

Albion used a strong start to game two to take an early lead. Jozefczyk worked a leadoff walk and Megan Maiuri and Miller followed with base hits. With one out, Anstandig lifted a fly ball deep enough to plate Jozefczyk for an early lead.

Defiance evened the game in the fourth, but the Britons scored their final three in the bottom of the fifth. Jozefczyk led off the inning with a single up the middle, and it was followed by an error by the Yellow Jackets.

Two batters later, Zaskowski drilled a double to the gap, driving in Jozefczyk. With two away, freshman Kiersten Wilkin crushed a double to right center, bringing in a pair of runs for a 4-1 lead.

A run by Defiance in the seventh did no harm, as Zaskowski and the defense held tough.

Zaskowski (8-3) threw a complete game, striking out five and walking only one.

Albion resumes MIAA action on Saturday with a twinbill at Hope College. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
