Softball drops two at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. — A pair of close games came up just short for the Albion College softball team, as the squad was swept by Hope College on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Hope 8 Albion 6

After Hope scored a pair in the bottom of the first, the Brits rallied for a five spot in the top of the fifth. With two on and two out, Megan Maiuri hit an infield single that brought in Courtney Ellis. After a walk to load the bases, an error on the Flying Dutch cleared the bases and gave Albion a 4-1 lead. Two batters later, a single from Kiersten Wilkin inflated the lead to 5-1.

The Flying Dutch immediately had an answer in the home half of the inning, bringing in two runs to cut into the Albion lead. Hope took the lead for good by scoring three runs off two hits and one Albion error in the bottom of the fourth. 

Maiuri had two of Albion's five hits and drove in two. 

GAME TWO: Hope 5 Albion 3 

It was a strong start for the Britons, as Wilkin hit a bases-clearing double that helped Albion take a 3-0 lead after one. Hope answered with five runs – three coming in the final two innings – to steal the win from the Britons. 

Junior Kearney Miller led Albion with three hits. 

On Wednesday, the Britons host Calvin University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
