Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Haynie's seven points gives MLAX win

ALBION – Backed by nine goals in the first quarter, the Albion College men's lacrosse team handled Calvin University, 19-11. Sophomore Marcus Haynie had a career-high seven points in the win.

In their annual Vs. Cancer game, the Brits sported gold undershirts and shoelaces in support of pediatric brain cancer. Men's lacrosse's biggest supporter – Harper Mathis – was in attendance and joined the team on field in pregame.

Haynie added to his MIAA-leading total with five goals and dished out two assists. Cal Stearns added five points for the Britons, coming via two goals and three assists. Logan Bride and Ben Schollett led the teams, each causing four turnovers.

Albion broke out to a 4-0 lead after the first four minutes. Senior co-captain Timmy Salinas tallied two of those goals, while Haynie and Ethan Rottell scored in that period. Stearns and Brendan Mercier helped inflate the lead, before three Haynie goals rounded out the first quarter. Through one, the Britons led 9-2.

Mercier and Haynie opened the third with goals and Brock Yabs scored the first of his three goals after a goal from the visitors. Albion ended the half on a 3-0 run thanks to Mercier, Stearns and Keegan Pastor

Calvin scored twice to start the third quarter before Yabs added another goal. Jack Heft scored a big man-down goal for the Britons, pushing the hosts ahead 17-6.

Junior Robbie Dameron went 18 of 32 from the faceoff X, picking up 11 ground balls.

In goal, freshman Caleb Howell made 12 saves to earn the victory.

The Britons outshot Calvin 62-39. Albion was also 14 of 19 on the clear, while the Knights struggled, converting just 18 of 27 clears. Albion held Calvin to go just 1 of 6 in man-up opportunities.

Albion is in great position to lock down the No. 2 seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and host a first round game. The Britons will have one more regular season contest – this Saturday at Adrian – for a 7 p.m. game to earn the right to host next week.
