Softball sweeps Comets on Senior Day

ALBION – It was a perfect way to celebrate the Albion College softball seniors, sweeping The University of Olivet on Saturday afternoon. The Brits won both via the run-rule, knocking off the Comets 9-1 in game one before a 9-0 win in the second game.

Following the games, Albion recognized its senior class of Jacqueline Jozefczyk, Courtney Ellis and Chloe Miller

GAME ONE: Albion 9 Olivet 1

Albion jumped on the Comets first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Courtney Ellis worked a one out walk and scored easily when Kearney Miller's impressive week continued with a double in the right center gap. Lilly Zaskowski followed with a single to left, pushing the Brits ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Brits tacked on two more runs. Once again, Miller and Zaskowski did the damage as a double from Miller was followed by another RBI single off the bat of Zaskowski for a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Kiersten Wilkin crushed a double to drive in Zaskowski.

Albion won the game via the run rule by plating five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Dylan Cardinal opened the inning with a double and advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. Wilkin smashed her second double of the game to bring in Cardinale, giving Albion a 5-1 lead. Albion took a 6-1 lead when Megan Maiuri ripped a single up the middle.

Bases loaded walks to Jacqueline Jozefczyk and Ellis helped Albion take an 8-1 advantage. The walkoff was complete when Miller lifted a sac fly to win the game for the Britons.

Zaskowski (10-6) earned the win in the circle while striking out nine batters. The freshman allowed just four hits in the win.

GAME TWO: Albion 9 Olivet 0

Albion needed only a 9-spot in the top of the first inning to command the second contest. Jozefczyk led off the game with an opposite field double. With two outs, the Britons struck for nine runs. Zaskowski was hit by a pitch before Wilkin drove in the first run with a single.

After an infield single off the bat of Chloe Miller, Jessie Anstandig provided the big blow with a bases clearing double to the gap in left center, helping Albion lead 4-0. Schramm followed with a double, trading places with Anstandig and giving the hosts a 5-0 advantage. An error allowed the Brits to take a 6-0 lead.

Ellis drove in another on her senior day, plating Rachel Horecki. Kearney Miller followed with another double, diving in two, to cap off the scoring.

Gabrielle Hirkaway earned her first win of the season in the circle after an injury plagued year. The junior allowed just one hit and struck out seven, going the distance in the five inning affair.

Albion has two doubleheaders remaining – both on the road. The Brits head to Saint Mary's College next Friday with games beginning at 3 p.m.
