Stellar pitching leads baseball to sweep

ALBION – A pair of electric pitching performances led the Albion College baseball team to a sweep over Trine University. In game one, the Britons run-ruled the Thunder, 10-0, before winning the nightcap 7-1.

Brayden Raether went the distance in game one, tossing seven scoreless innings, while striking out seven and walking none. In game two, junior Drew Renner tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits through nine innings and fanning three.

GAME ONE: Albion 10 Trine 0 (7 innings)

The Brits pushed across three in the home half of the first inning. Evan Schuster drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single off the bat of Matt McGann. Kris Stojanovski continued his hot season with an opposite field single, but a misplayed ball allowed both runners to score for a 2-0 lead. With Stojanovski at third, Ryker Mazey recorded a RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead.

In the second, a one-out single from Carson Dunn and a single from Schuster put runners at the corners for Mark Lauro. Lauro delivered his first of four RBI in the game with a sac fly. Lauro added the other three with a three run home run in the bottom of the sixth, helping Albion lead 7-0 through six.

Albion scored three in the bottom of the seventh for the run rule. A single by Mazey and a pinch hit walk from Logan Farmer put two aboard for Braeden Emery. The senior lined a double to left, driving in both before Ethan Caris launched a double for the final run of the game.

GAME TWO: Albion 7 Trine 1

Despite Trine getting on the board first, the Britons went on to score seven unanswered to sweep the series against the Thunder. Albion immediately answered by putting up a six spot in the home half of the frame.

Lauro singled up the middle and moved to second when McGann was hit by a pitch. A single off the bat of Stojanovski loaded the bases. Mazey drew a walk for the first run of the game for Albion. Sophomore Garrett Draper followed with a single up the middle, driving in both McGann and Stojanovski.

Emery doubled to left, plating both Draper and Mazey for a 5-1 lead. Jack Lasceski later came around to score on a wild pitch, capping off the inning for the Britons.

Albion's final run came in the eighth, when Schuster led off with a single and moved 90 feet on a balk. After a wild pitch, he scored on a triple from Stojanovski. The hit was the junior's third of the game and is tied for the Albion single-season record.

The Brits host Olivet on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. single game.
