KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Kalamazoo attack was swarming Albion's box.
Knotted up at 1-1 with 17 seconds left, Britons women's soccer goalkeeper
Maddie Welsh saved a shot attempt in the lower right post area and forced a corner kick at MacKenzie Field.
As the Hornets quickly sent the ball in off the attempt, the ball bounced once and right at the feet of Kalamazoo's Lexi Gross who got off a clean shot attempt aimed at the middle of the net with two seconds left.
Fortunately, Welsh, donning an all-pink kit, got her hands on the ball for the save, covering it up safely and preserving the hard-fought tie for the Britons.
The sophomore held strong all match long. Playing the full 90 minutes for the first time all season, Welsh faced 18 shots and made a career-high eight saves.
Albion's attack was not as strong, recording just three shots on the evening.
Welsh kept the score at 0-0 in the first half with five saves as the Britons could only get two attempts off in the stanza.
The Hornets finally put one in the back of the net in the 61st minute, as Ruby Hogan scored off a free kick that went just over Welsh's head to take the initial advantage.
However, Albion made its only shot attempt of the half pure six minutes later off a throw in as
Diane Hurtado received the ball and passed it over to fellow freshman
Chloe Salo who struck just inside the box and buried it just inside the right post to knot it up.
Kalamazoo rattled off four more shots before the 17-second sequence at the end of the match.
After setting a Division III record with 10 ties in 2023, it was the Britons' first knot since October 5, 2024 against Olivet.
Bella Fabrizio and
Brook Zeleny were the other Albion players who had a shot attempt in the match.
