ALBION, Mich. -- The Albion College women's soccer team got back in the win column in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over conference foe Adrian College.
With the win, Albion moved into fifth place on the conference leaderboard with an MIAA record of 2-3-2 and eight conference points. Adrian moved to 3-4 in conference action with nine conference place to sit fourth. The victory marked the Brits first triumph over Adrian at home since the 2016 season.
In a game of razor thin margins between two hungry sides,
Ceci Irwin made the difference for the Britons in the 20th minute.
Mia Czarnowski got the scoring sequence with some nifty footwork that freed her of her defender.
The sophomore raced into the left side of Adrian's penalty area and whipped the ball across the mouth of the goal. Irwin was lying in wait and booted the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning tally, her second goal of the season. For Czarnowski, the helper went down as her third of the campaign.
The Brits searched for an insurance goal throughout the remainder of the tilt.
Abby O'Connell,
Grace Halstead and
Lilyana Molby all tested Adrian's goalkeeper but were rebuffed to keep the game at 1-0.
When the Bulldogs did manage to break through Albion's defensive setup,
Maddie Welsh stood tall in goal. The sophomore tallied six saves to keep Adrian off the scoreboard, including three in the second half to preserve the win.
On defense
Alyssa Williamson and
Erica Fischer logged 90 minute shifts to see out the win.
