Britons Clinch MIAA Tournament's No. 5 Seed in Dramatic Regular Season Finale Against Alma

Albion, Mich. – On a brisk October night against Alma, the Albion women's soccer team clinched the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament in a dramatic, 4-3 victory at Alumni Field.

With St. Mary's losing to Hope earlier in the evening, 4-0, the Britons earned a spot in the MIAA Tournament before the match began but sealed their seeding with the win.

In the 24th minute, the Britons broke the ice as freshman Chloe Salo busted up the middle on a breakaway to make the match 1-0.

Albion continued their offensive power as Salo scored just 41 seconds later on an assist by sophomore Kelsi Green.

"It was a great setup by Kelsi and a fantastic finish from Chloe, which gave her really good opportunities to score," Albion head coach Ron Rainey said.

Just 47 seconds later, Alma was able to create a penalty kick opportunity, which they converted into a goal, making the match 2-1.

With 4:12 left in the first half, Mary Coburn passed the ball across the box to Micaela Hohlbein, who shot it upper right corner to put it past the goalie to make the game 3-1 for the Britons where it would remain at the half.

Maddie Welsh made three saves in the stanza for Albion.

With 33:43 remaining in the second half, the Scots cut the lead in half, making it 3-2 off a corner kick to a header past Welsh.

Alma started to gain momentum heading into the latter half of the second half "playing with nothing to lose" as Rainey put it.

The Scots were able to tie the game 3-3 with 10:45 left in the second half off a breakaway.

One minute later, Bella Fabrizio booted a free kick, which was headed in by Abby O'Connell to get the lead back, 4-3.

"With the win tonight, it gives us another opportunity to compete, which we are really excited about," Rainey said.
