Wrestling bounces Trine on Senior Night

ALBION – Celebrating a special senior class, the Albion College men's and women's wrestling teams defeated Trine University to wrap up the regular season. The men's team earned a 33-9 victory over the Thunder, ending MIAA action 3-1.

Prior to the match, CJ Krum, Max Honiss, Jeremy Sarter, Jayla Oberst and Owen McDaniel were all recognized. This class were the freshmen on the 2021-22 squad – the first in the revival of the men's program and addition of the women's team.

Sarter battled to an 11-10 win to open the night with three points for the Brits. Junior Cade Odrobina followed with a tech fall at 133, giving Albion an 8-0 lead through two bouts.

After a Trine win at 141, Honiss and Justin Gorman recorded back to back pins for a 12 point swing. Honiss needed just 3:56 to win at 149, as Gorman used his final few seconds for a big pin at 157.

The Thunder took the 165 match, but Owen Turnbow showed grit at 174, winning by a 2-1 margin. McDaniel also weathered late threats from Trine to win 17-16 in the following bout, before Demond Harrison worked his way to a 12-5 victory. Krum ended the night in typical Krum fashion – a bonus point win at 285 (12-3).

In the women's bouts, Oberst celebrated her senior night with an 11-0 tech fall victory. At 138, junior Hannah Arledge needed just 90 seconds to pin her opponent, sparking three straight falls. Freshman Keaton Hood followed at 145 with a pin, as Abbie Miles's 59 second fall wrapped up the women's bouts.

Both teams will prepare for regionals in the coming weeks. On Feb. 22, the women will be at Adrian for their regional, while the men will head to Wabash Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
