Schuemann scores hat trick in MLAX opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A late run by Sewanee cost the Albion College men's lacrosse team in its season opener, dropping a 12-11 decision to the Tigers. In the final period, the Tigers outscored Albion 5-2.

Freshman Luke Schuemann sparkled in his collegiate debut, scoring three goals and dishing out an assist. Brendan Mercier and Mathieu Champoux each finished with a pair of goals and an assist for the Britons.

Thanks to two goals by Schuemann and a man-up strike from Cal Stearns, the Britons cut the Sewanee lead to 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. Andrew Miller scored his first of two goals on the day in the second, Albion's lone second quarter goal, as Sewanee led 5-4 at halftime.

Albion went on a 4-0 run in the third, but Sewanee was able to answer back to eventually tie and take the lead.

Connor Laidlaw went 13 of 24 at the face off X, picking up six ground balls. Junior Logan Bride caused a team-high three turnovers.

Tomorrow, the Britons wrap up their Nashville trip with a 10 a.m. CST game against Bridgewater.
