Softball plates 21, splits with Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – In a pair of offensive clinics, the Albion College softball team split a doubleheader with Heidelberg University. The Britons won game one 15-11 before narrowly dropping the nightcap 7-6.

GAME ONE: Albion 15 Heidelberg 11

After putting up nine runs in the top of the first, the Britons remained tough through the contest as the Berg continued to creep closer. Kiersten Wilkin, Kayla Cole and Kearney Miller all drove in three runs in the opener.

Back to back walks to open the game was followed when Miller crushed a double to left center, driving in both. Albion continued piling up the runs before rounding out the frame with RBI singles from Megan Maiuri and Miller.

In the second, Natalie Kinney smacked an RBI single up the middle. Albion would be held scoreless until the fifth when they added three runs. Wilkin drew a bases loaded walk and Cole drove in a pair with a hit for a larger cushion for the Brits.

With the most dangerous part of the order up and runners on first and second, Gabrielle Hirkaway struck out the Heidelberg batter looking for a 15-11 victory.

Lilly Zaskowski (5-2) went six innings, striking out four.

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 7 Albion 6

A late comeback fell just short for the Brits in the nightcap. In the second inning, Albion exploded for a four spot, sparked by Wilkin's leadoff double. After Rachel Horecki bunted for a hit, the Britons got a run on a fielder's choice. Later in the frame, three straight hits from Kinney, Miller and Zaskowski drove in runs for a 4-2 lead.

Albion added two more runs in the sixth, thanks to a fielder's choice and an RBI single off the bat of Zaskowski.

As of now, the Britons will host Manchester University on Sunday for their home opener. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
