Softball opens 2025 home slate

ALBION – In their home opener, the Albion College softball team dropped a tough pair of one-run games to Bluffton University. A lead slipped away in the first game before a comeback fell 60 feet short in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Bluffton 5 Albion 4

Albion's first run came in the bottom of the second when Rachel Horecki's line drive drove in Jessie Anstandig. The Britons struck for two more in the fourth. Anstandig hit a one-out single and moved to second on a single from Kiersten Wilkin. Horecki drew a walk, and with two outs, Emma Schramm came up big, ripping a base hit up the middle for two Albion runs.

Wilkin drove in the final Albion run with a sac fly in the fifth. The sophomore was 2 for 2 in the first game.

Bluffton tied the game in the top of the sixth by adding four runs and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

Lilly Zaskowski (ND) went six innings, striking out eight.

GAME TWO: Bluffton 6 Albion 5

The Beavers held a 6-0 lead through four innings before Albion was able to push across three runs in the fifth. Natalie Kinney and Sydney Schoenborn smacked back to back singles before they both came around to score on a double by Kearney Miller. Two batters later, Anstanding drove in Miller with a double of her own to cut Bluffton's lead to 6-3.

Schoenborn and Miller singled in the seventh inning, forcing the Beavers to make a pitching change. After the two moved 60 feet on a wild pitch, Zaskowski drove in the pair to bring the Britons within a run. The Britons got the tying run to third, but Bluffton worked around the jam.

Schoenbord was 3 for 4 while Miller added two hits.

Tomorrow, the Brits will play Grace Christian at 1 and 3 p.m. at home.
