Game Recap: Softball |

Softball dominates in sweep

ALBION – In dominant fashion, the Albion College softball team swept Grace Christian University, 8-0 and 18-0. Sophomore Lilly Zaskowski picked up a win in game one, striking out nine, before getting the job done by roping two home runs in game two.

The Britons improve to 10-10 on the season.

GAME ONE: Albion 8 Grace Christian 0

Backed by a five run first, the Brits were able to get an early lead on the Tigers. A two-out rally sparked by a single off the bat of Zaskowski gave the Britons a 1-0 lead. With two on, Kiersten Wilkin roped a single up the middle to drive in Zaskowski, and Megan Maiuri followed with a single to plate Jessie Anstandig. Rachel Horecki followed with a two-run double for a 5-0 advantage after one.

Albion's lead inflated to 7-0 in the second. Sydney Schoenborn smacked an RBI single and Wilkin lifted a sac fly to center to give the Brits a comfortable lead. The Britons got their eighth run to put the run rule into effect in the home half of the fourth inning.

Zaskowski (6-2) went the distance, allowing just three hits and striking out nine.

GAME TWO: Albion 18 Grace Christian 0

Putting up five spots in the first three innings, Albion cruised to a big lead early on. Kearney Miller crushed a 2-run triple in the first before a Zaskowski long ball pushed Albion ahead 4-0. Gabrielle Hirkaway – who had a three double afternoon – ripped her first of the day, driving in Wilkin for a 5-0 lead.

Albion added five more in the home half of the second, thanks to another double by Hirkaway that drove in two, while Allie Trantham ended the rally with a single to center field. The next five runs came highlighted by another home run off the bat of Zaskowski, while Hirkaway, Wilkin and Emma Schramm all recorded RBIs.

Grace Martin smoked a 2-run double in the fourth inning, providing Albion's final blow.

Hirkaway (3-6) tossed a one-hitter, striking out four batters over three innings. Both Emilie Golstein and Alaina Brown were stellar in relief, combining for no hits.

The Britons head to John Caroll on Sunday for games at 12 and 2 p.m.
