Softball opens MIAA action with split

ALBION – With its first win over Alma since 2009, the Albion College softball earned a split with the Scots on Friday. After the Scots win game one 5-2, the Britons fired off a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Alma 5 Albion 2

Five runs in the fifth were enough for Alma to escape with the game one victory. The Britons cut into Alma's lead in the sixth with their two runs. An error and a single from Natalie Kinney was followed by a walk issued to Sydney Schoenborn.

With two outs, Lilly Zaskowski doubled home a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 5-2. Albion was unable to add any more runs, giving the Scots the first win of the day.

GAME TWO: Albion 10 Alma 0

In the second game, the Brits rolled from the start. Batting as the visitors, Natalie Kinney led off the frame with a triple and came in to score on a Zaskowski double. Gabrielle Hirkaway and Albion's defense got Alma to leave the bases loaded in the first, sending all the momentum in favor of the Brits.

Albion plated two more runs in the top of the second inning. With two aboard, Kinney roped a single, driving home Rachel Horecki for a 2-0 lead. After a HBP, Kearney Miller drew a bases loaded walk to vault Albion ahead 3-0.

Kinney led off the fourth with a single and moved 60 feet on a Sydney Schoenborn sac bunt. Miller cranked a double to right center, bringing home Kinney for a 4-0 advantage. Zaskowski drove in the final Albion run of the frame for a 5-0 cushion.

Albion rallied for a two-out rally in the top of the seventh for plenty of insurance. Five consecutive RBI singles by Schoenborn, Miller, Zaskowski, Anstandig and Wilkin inflated the lead to 10-0.

Hirkaway was strong in the complete game outing. The senior allowed just six hits in the win (4-6).

The Britons host Hope College tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m.
